CHINESE AGGRESSION

china clinton.jpg

Even though major media companies accused President Trump of starting trade wars with China in 2018, China had already started a war two decades earlier. In 2000 under Pres. Clinton’s administration, he and the United States Congress rushed through a bill which granted China permanent most-favorite-nation-status, which provided China with generous trading terms. This concession enabled China to join the World Trade Organization the next year after which China promptly launched an economic world war.

Since 2001, China’s economy has grown more than 1200% equal to $16 trillion, the spoils of perhaps the most successful and one-sided economic contest in history. The losers were America and you, in the form of fewer jobs, lower wages, shoddier products, and a more dangerous world.

The Chinese Communist Party has manipulated China’s currency, created state-backed corporation giants, illegally dumped subsidized products into foreign markets, enslaved its people, and destroyed its environment. China didn’t win a global economic competition; it rigged the game.

China promised to open its economy, compete fairly, and play by international rules to supposedly create a market of 1.4 billion customers for American businesses. Instead, while US leaders were busy with the September 11 attacks, China began devaluing its currency, which made Chinese goods cheaper to sell to Americans, and this gave its manufacturers an illegal advantage over American workers and businesses. These years of currency manipulation contributed to our nation’s total trade deficit of more than $6 trillion with China since 2001.

The Chinese Communist Party not only manipulated China's currency, but also directly controls up to 40% of China’s economy through 150,000 government owned companies. Nearly one and five Fortune Global 500 companies are owned by the Chinese government. China’s government backed industries now produce more cement, steel, and ships than the rest of the world combined. The party’s corporate giants also process nearly 90% of the world’s rare-earth elements, which are essential to manufacturing everything electronic from your smart phone to your computer to your car.

China also condemned millions of its subjects to modern day slavery, forcing them to work in sweltering cotton fields, miserable factories, and on dangerous fishing trollers. Communist deny social services to hundreds of millions of rural Chinese workers and thus forces them into low paying big city jobs. These methods artificially lower wages and give Chinese companies yet another edge over foreign competitors. How can an American worker compete against slaves or indentured servants in Xinjiang or Tibet?

Chinese communist have allowed companies to destroy their environment to keep costs low. Up to 90% of China’s groundwater and around half its river water are now undrinkable. Chinese die each year from outdoor air pollution, with state-backed factories, spewing soot, heavy metals, and toxins into the air. The price for decades of deliberate indifference to public health is high, but the party is happy to let the Chinese people pay instead of its state-back businesses.

China steals foreign technology and shakes down foreign companies on an unprecedented scale. The United States loses between $225 and $600 billion from intellectual property theft every single year. Some of the most valuable assets in the modern economy, such as patents, trade secrets, blueprints, sensitive data, formulas, and so forth are at risk. Between 60 and 75 percent of the counterfeit and pirated goods seized at the ports originate from Chinese thieves.

China engages in cyber warfare to pursue ill-gotten gains. Chinese hackers targeted more than two dozen American companies, including Dow Chemicals, Morgan Stanley, and Google. And yet another sign of China’s gangster methods, only Google, which is already severely restricted in China, named Chinese hackers as the culprit; the rest feared retaliation.

China also uses old-fashioned espionage. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese students and researchers are usually present in America and some of these are conspiring to rob companies, universities, and laboratories. In 2015, a Chinese researcher stole DNA samples and research from a Yale geneticist to enable China’s police state to target the Uyghur people. In 2019, two Chinese researchers at Harvard tried to steal 21 vials of biological research on cancer cells. Between 2006 and 2010, a Chinese student at Duke University allegedly stole research from his American mentor’s lab and then founded a multibillion-dollar company and branded himself “China’s Elon Musk.”

America’s biggest and most sophisticated companies aren’t exempt. In 2017, a Chinese engineer at Coca-Cola stole over $100 million worth of trade secrets and then opened a multibillion-dollar company in China with government funding. In 2024, the Department of Justice arrested a former Google engineer for stealing hundreds of files related to artificial intelligence while also serving as CEO of a Chinese company.

Nor are our states exempt. Chinese researchers working on a government-funded rice research center in Arkansas stole millions of dollars’ worth of proprietary rice-seed technology, and handed it over to a Chinese crop Institute.

The Chinese Communists are even more antagonistic against foreign companies operating within China’s borders. China routinely forces foreign companies into joint ventures with Chinese companies. The Party orders the foreign companies to transfer key technology to their Chinese partner. The DuPont Corporation surrendered proprietary chemical technology; General Electric turned over cutting edge, airplane electronics; General Motors transferred sophisticated electric-vehicle technology; and IBM handed over partial blueprints to its high-end servers and the software running them.

Foreign companies are living on borrowed time in China. Chinese law deters foreign companies from protecting their intellectual property by threatening them with million-dollar weekly fines if they sue anywhere, but in the corrupt Chinese court.

So, as Pres. Trump negotiates with Xi, don’t have feelings of sympathy for China.  Their economic policies have been “lie, cheat, and steal” for decades.  Considering all they have taken and still take from our country, they deserve a 100% on tariffs, but a decision will come this Thursday, October 30th.
